Hi friends! Welcome back! Let's chat a bit about oversized coats. This is one of my favorite times of year for fashion because it's finally freezing outside which means I can wear my most dramatic coats without feeling like I'm overdoing it. I naturally get very hot very easily so it needs to be pretty cold for me to not overheat in my coat and finally, the time has come.
As you all know, when it comes to winter coats, I like them long and I like them oversized. Big shoulders, big sleeves, big pockets...if I don't feel like I can fit two of me in there, it's not big enough. Just kidding. It still has to be flattering, but you know what I mean. I think the key to pulling off an oversized coat without looking sloppy is 1) having proper proportions and 2) the shape and structure of the coat. For example, when it comes to proportions, if my coat is super roomy, I like to wear an outfit that's more fitted underneath and a sleek shoe to add contrast to the bulkiness on top. As far as the shape of the coat, knowing what you feel best in is key. I have smaller shoulders so I like a coat that's bold in the shoulders to add a bit of power to my look. Someone with broader shoulders may not be into that look so maybe opt for a coat with a drop shoulder instead. Also, I'm someone who cannot stand the feeling of constricted coat arms. I need the arms of my coat to be wide enough that if I want to wear a second jacket or three sweaters underneath, I can do that and still have extra room. This is not only from a comfort perspective, but also from a style perspective. I am just personally not a fan of how coats/jackets/blazers look when the arms aren't loose. Some people think you look more put together when the arms are more fitted and I get that but, respectfully, I disagree.
Okay, this rant has gone on longer than I intended. Apparently I'm very passionate about coats. Anyway, for this week's look, I finally had a chance to style this grey faux shearling coat I got a couple months ago. As I mentioned above, since this is a big coat, I wore something simple and sleek underneath, opting for a fitted turtleneck, a pair of black straight leg jeans, and a little red kitten heel. The coat brings the drama so you can keep the rest of the outfit effortless, serving cool rich aunt vibes.
